Worker dies in Italian ammonia leak
10th January 2025ITALY: A large ammonia spill at a food storage and distribution company in the province of Caserta, north of Naples, has resulted in the death of a 19-year-old maintenance worker.
The incident at the the Frigocaserta plant in Gricignano d’Aversa was first reported at around 16.00 local time today and was attended by three firefighting teams, police and ambulance services, as well as specialist chemical teams from Naples and Caserta.
In the interests of safety, the entire area surrounding the company’s premises, including the neighbouring factories, was evacuated. The local population was advised to stay indoors.
According to reports, the leak occurred during maintenance on a “tank” by four workers employed by an industrial refrigeration maintenance company from Villaricca, near Naples. Three of the workers managed to escape, despite being badly affected by the fumes. The fourth, named as Patrizio Spasiano, was unable to get out.
