Price of high GWP refrigerants continues to rise

EUROPE: Prices of the high GWP refrigerants R410A, R134a and R404A experienced significant price increases across the supply chain in the first quarter of this year.

According to the latest price monitoring report from Öko-Recherche, R410A saw price increases of 20%, R134a was up 15% and R404A up 7% compared to the average price levels reported in Q4 2023.

The prices of all alternatives have been increasing, although not to the same extent as traditional HFC blends. For example, Öko-Recherche reports current prices of the lower GWP R404A replacement blends R448A and R449A at around €29/kg, while R744 is €2/kg and R290 €6/kg.

No supply problems were reported, with the EU refrigerant market appearing to be relatively stable.

Permit prices for allowances varied between €15 and €18.5/tCO2e in the first quarter of this year. On average, permit prices were around €16.5/tCO2e, an increase of 6% compared to the previous quarter.
