Carrier chillers are R513A compatible

USA: Carrier has announced that its AquaEdge 19XR and 23XR and AquaForce 30XV/XA chillers are compatible with the lower GWP refrigerant R513A.

In a statement, Carrier says the move is part of its commitment to supporting the drive for lower global warming refrigerant solutions. R513A and the existing refrigerant R134a will both be supported in Carrier chillers.

Marketed by Chemours as Opteon XP10, R513A is a binary mixture of R134a (44%) and R1234yf (56%). It has a GWP of around 630 and carries the ASHRAE safety classification of A1.

“Our customers rely on Carrier for quality, reliability and predictability and they will be pleased to know our AquaEdge 19XR and 23XR water-cooled chillers along with our AquaForce 30XV/XA air-cooled chillers are able to transition smoothly from R134a to lower GWP R513A at the same time we pursue the development of other low global warming refrigerant alternatives,” said Chris Opie, director, North America commercial marketing.

“We believe R134a will continue to provide the best combination of availability, cost, performance and safety for many years to come. The ability to convert our R134a centrifugal chillers to lower GWP R513A provides owners and facility managers even greater options that ensure the full useful life of this chiller,” Opie added.

The move follows last week’s announcement by Carrier Transicold that its PrimeLINE reefer units would shortly be available for conversion to R513A.

Carrier’s US chiller competitors Trane and JohnsonControls/York have previously announced the adoption of R513A.
