Qvantum heat pumps enter the UK market

UK: Swedish heat pump manufacturer Qvantum has officially introduced its propane-based heat pump solutions to the UK market.
The UK company led by CEO Phil Ord, the former Mitsubishi Electric commercial product director, will offer the full range of products. In addition to air-water, water-to-water, geothermal and ambient loop apartment heat pump systems, the range also includes exhaust air heat pumps and integrated thermal storage.
Following around 1,000 installations in Sweden, the product is now also being rolled out in the Netherlands, Poland, France, Austria and Germany.
“We believe our unique heat pump solutions genuinely bring something new to the UK and can provide the impetus to redirect the way we consume energy to service the needs of the domestic heating and hot water market,” commented Phil Ord.
“A big part of the challenge is to harvest and store renewable energy when it is plentiful, often in excess of what we actually need, and use it when demand increases above the generating capacity of the grid. Qvantum is here to help shift that peak.’’
The UK management team is complemented by technical sales director Darren Manley, former commercial solutions sales manager at Daikin UK, and Geoff Turton, former Mitsubishi Electric commercial lifecycle solutions director.
Bolton-based plumbers’ merchant Oliver Ashworth is the sole distributor in the UK at the moment but others are due to be added.
Training will be provided in-house with an online platform as well as face-to-face at Qvantum’s dedicated training room at its Moorgate offices.
Product range
The QA air-source heat pump is available in heating capacities of 9 kW and 15kW.
The QE exhaust air heat pumps in 4kW and 6kW versions are capable of providing heating, instantaneous domestic hot water and ventilation. As an added benefit, the QE is also able to provide a degree of cooling with a flow temperature of around 18°C. This is not comfort cooling, but more ‘overheat mitigation’ aiming to prevent adversely high temperatures and assist compliance with Part O.
The QG, a water-to-water, geothermal or ambient loop apartment heat pump system is available in 6kW and 12kW capacities supplying heating, cooling and instantaneous domestic hot water for both single households with individual collectors as well as in ambient or low temperature water loop applications.
The integrated QH-XL water tank, or QH-L wall mounted version, is used as a thermal store to provide instantaneous hot water and charged like a battery.
The thermal batteries have a capacity of up to 12kWh and enable all Qvantum heat pumps to shift energy consumption for heating and hot water away from peak periods, easing the load on electricity grids and reducing environmental impact through time of use (ToU) shifting, in addition to offering running cost saving for the property owner.
The thermal store can be heated to high temperatures by the heat pump or an integrated immersion heater, consuming electricity when it is cheaper, in abundance, or produced during low carbon intensity.
Hot water is produced indirectly via a plate heat exchanger using energy from the thermal store, so the need for a legionella pasteurisation cycle is removed. A property’s heating system can be served directly from the heat pump compressor module at any time or from the thermal store for peak load saving, or a mixture of both.
The products are manufactured in two locations – Quantum’s Swedish headquarters factory in Åstorp, which is capable of producing 50,000 heat pumps annually, and its factory in Hungary, acquired in 2023, with the potential to produce up to one million heat pumps per year.
