IoR celebrates Lord Kelvin at 200
23rd April 2024UK: The Institute of Refrigeration will mark this year’s World Refrigeration Day with a celebration of the achievements and contributions of mechanical refrigeration pioneer Lord Kelvin.
World Refrigeration Day on June 26 this year also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of William Thomson, better known as Lord Kelvin, the Scottish-born father of thermodynamics and creator of the Kelvin scale.
To celebrate the occasion, the Institute of Refrigeration has planned a special webinar discussion led by broadcasters Helen Czerski and Alok Jha to celebrate Lord Kelvin’s achievements and contributions. Helen Czerski is a British physicist and oceanographer and television presenter. She is an associate professor in the department of mechanical engineering at University College London. Alok Jha is the science and technology editor at The Economist and host of the Babbage podcast.
While Lord Kelvin is widely recognised as the pioneer of mechanical refrigeration, his contributions extend far beyond the refrigeration sector. This discussion with media broadcasters aims to shed light on his profound impact on scientific progress, engineering and his invaluable contribution to refrigeration. Through an exploration of the life and legacy of Lord Kelvin the webinar will look at why his pioneering work remains relevant today.
The discussion will be based on questions sent in from IOR members.
