Taking control of ammonia refrigeration systems

DENMARK: NeoCharge is a new solution from Danfoss designed to cut energy costs, increase capacity and enhance control of low-charge ammonia refrigeration systems.

While low-charge systems can markedly cut ammonia charge, Danfoss argues that they have been difficult to control and there has been no reliable solution for retrofitting existing systems.

NeoCharge allows contractors and facility owners to give any type of refrigeration system low-charge capabilities, while cutting energy costs and allowing the expansion of system capacities.

It enables DX) systems to run without superheat. In traditional flooded systems, the solution reduces recirculation to the lowest possible rate while maintaining high system performance.

Danfoss claims that energy costs can be reduced by up to 20% compared to standard DX systems, and system capacity can be increased by up to 40% using the same ammonia charge.

At the heart of the technology is the Danfoss EKE450 electronic evaporator controller, a NeoCharge controller and sensor. The system can operate with either a single injection valve or a full evaporator. Its plug and play design and minimal configuration requirements make installation simple, Danfoss says.

NeoCharge’s heated sensor monitors evaporator conditions, providing real-time insights into refrigerant quality.

Compatibility extends to traditional pump circulation systems with the addition of new PWM function modules. These modules can be easily integrated with existing ICF platforms, offering greater flexibility and application possibilities. The system is also compatible with ICM and AKVA valves, further expanding its versatility.

“With NeoCharge, contractors, consultants, and facility owners can breathe new life into existing systems. It’s a fully plug and play solution that works with both classic recirculating and direct expansion systems,” explained Danfoss Industrial Refrigeration advisor Morten Juel Skovrup.

“NeoCharge lowers the entry barrier to low-charge capabilities significantly and opens up opportunities for a much wider range of operators to play their role in the transition towards a more climate-friendly industry,” he added.
