Maersk adopts R1234yf for reefers
3rd September 2024DENMARK: Maersk Container Industry has adopted HFO refrigerant R1234yf for its new Star Cool 1.1 refrigerated container.
As well as being the first reefer to use low GWP R1234yf, the Star Cool 1.1 boasts enhanced energy efficiency, consuming 8% less energy than previous models. This has been achieved through advancements in next-generation compressor technology and design optimisation.
“After completion of an extensive R&D and verification programme, we are excited to offer our customers the first reefer solution that offers adaptability to three alternative refrigerants while operating with the highest energy efficiency in the market,’’ commented MCI CEO Søren Leth Johannsen.
“The Star Cool 1.1 is a significant innovation in our quest to support the decarbonisation of the shipping industry,” added head of reefer technology and innovation Paul Clarke.
“We have thoroughly field tested the upgraded Star Cool system and it is instrumental in our efforts to achieve lower energy consumption and reduced emissions, aligning with our long-term sustainability goals.
The built-in energy meter that records energy usage and transmits this data wirelessly through the Sekstant solution. This integrated system not only tracks energy savings but also converts this information into carbon footprint data for specific voyages or periods, offering operators insight into their environmental impact.
