Swegon to supply heat pumps for Finnish DH network
10th December 2023SWEDEN/FINLAND: Swegon is to supply 40 air-to-water heat pumps for Finnish energy company Fortum’s district heating network in Kolabacken, Kirkkonummi and Hepokorpi in Espoo, Finland.
The 40 Swegon heat pumps, comprising eight Omicron Sky units running on R454B refrigerant and 32 Tetris Sky units using R32 refrigerant, have a capacity to deliver in total up to 24MW at 0°C ambient.
In June, Fortum announced the proposed investment of around €225m during 2023-2027 in projects within the Espoo Clean Heat programme. Fortum’s heat pump plants will recycle energy from both the ambient air and waste heat released from data centres, to Fortum’s district heating customers.
The heat pumps will be manufactured at Swegon’s factory in Italy and planned delivery to Fortum is scheduled throughout 2025. The construction of the heat pump plants is set to be completed by the end of 2025, with district heat production commencing during the 2025–2026 heating season.
Once the data centres are fully operational, Fortum’s heat pump plants are anticipated to cover approximately 40% of the district heating needs for the cities of Espoo, Kauniainen, and Kirkkonummi.
